KCPL Utilities Bridge
Energizing an entire district
Unlike many bridges designed to convey people or vehicular traffic, this is a bridge for power. The design challenge was to visually enhance the appearance of the utilitarian bridge from the interstate below and the adjacent Kansas City Power & Light entertainment district. The bridge is a simple utilitarian truss structure lined with large electrical conduits, clad with a perforated black zinc skin and filled with pulsating light. Like electricity, the bridge becomes more noticeable at night. A vibrant blue glow pulsates through the bridge from south to north, reflecting the flow of power that serves the Power & Light Entertainment District.
