Grain Valley New Municipal Complex
Upholding the balance of preserving a rich history and embracing a new future.
The suburban-rural community of Grain Valley, located 25 minutes east of downtown Kansas City, has emerged as one of the fastest growing communities in the metro area. Taking a strategic approach to its evolution, the City and its residents identified new opportunities and top priorities that would ensure Grain Valley’s new future as a thriving, forward-thinking community while still preserving its unique small-town charm.

Grain Valley’s current City Hall, police department, and community center have not been able to keep pace with the City’s rapid growth. Helix Architecture + Design, in collaboration with Sapp Design Architects, recently completed the master planning and programming phases for a new Municipal Complex. Located on the historic Sni-A-Bar Farm, the complex will offer a holistic solution for both the City’s administrative needs and the residents’ desire for a communal space in which to gather.
Comprised of a city hall and police station, a recreation center with indoor aquatics, and a new Mid-Continent Public Library branch, the Municipal Complex will create a destination on the historic farmstead. As the design team moves from programming and pre-design into schematic design, the buildings’ forms will begin to take shape.
