Creating an upscale dining experience in the heart of the Crossroads

Farina is the latest restaurant from James Beard Award-winning Chef Michael Smith and his wife and managing partner Nancy. Helix worked closely with the Smiths to develop a modern Italian concept inspired by the regions of Tuscany and Umbria. The 5,500-square-foot restaurant features seating for 90 guests along with an intimate cocktail bar, a fresh oyster and charcuterie bar, and a 20-seat private party room. The restaurant layout capitalizes on large windows along the north and west walls to draw natural light into the space and connect patrons to the activity in the surrounding Crossroads Arts District.

Helix achieved Smith’s desired ambiance of “rustic elegance” through the use of wide-plank wood floors, stacked stone accents, custom rugs and raw leather upholstery that will take on a patina with time. A custom wood ceiling, made from varying sizes of white oak planks, serves as both a functional and aesthetic feature.

In addition to creating an immersive hospitality experience within Farina, Helix is providing design services for the complete renovation of the historic building that the restaurant resides within. Located at 1901 Baltimore, the 18,000-square-foot building also houses Haw Gallery on the first floor and office space on the second floor.
