KCPD East Patrol Campus

The Kansas City Police Department East Patrol division is committed to having a positive influence on the community starting from the design of their new campus. The East Patrol Campus—comprised of a police station, a multi-purpose building, a crime lab, and a property and evidence repository—will be located on 27th and Prospect, right in the middle of where they currently receive the most calls for service.

Project officials have specifically sought out Section 3 businesses to work with and the project will provide employment and training opportunities for low income residents during the estimated 24 months of construction. The whole design and decision making process has been made accessible and transparent to the community through public meetings, the East Patrol website, and the bimonthly newsletter. These resources are a wonderful way to see how, where, and why your tax dollars are being spent. They also serve to showcase the design process at Helix and demonstrate how every design decision, from location to design partnership to material usage, is made consciously.

Helix Stays Healthy

Mark Neibling braves the flu shot.

Today, Helix prepared for the change in seasons by arming ourselves against the flu.  17 members of the Helix staff signed up to receive the flu shot, administered in house with the help of Blue Cross Blue Shield.  The virtually painless process will hopefully keep everyone healthy and happy through winter!

Color + Couture Sneek Peak

Helix is teaming up with Messerschmitt, Inc. for this year’s Color + Couture, a fashion show put on by the International Interior Design Association and creatively-awesome local design firms paired with equally great product manufacturers. Last year we designed this fabulous carpet Can-can dress:

Helix Day 2012

Helix Day gives us all a chance to relax, bond with our families, and celebrate the camaraderie that we find at work.

This year it also gave us a chance to yell loudly and wildly in a socially-acceptable setting.

After work last Friday, we packed up and headed over to the Livestrong Sporting Park to tailgate, eat and cheer Sporting KC to a 2-0 victory over Chicago.

The in-house material library at Helix is pretty fabulous, but it pays to keep an eye out for something different. Our librarian, Marcie Miller-Gross, is always on the lookout for what is new and exciting in the world of architecture and design. Transmaterial is one resource she looks to for information and relays some of the more intriguing articles around the office for inspiration.

Thought that solar energy could only be harvested from flat panels? Rawlemon of Barcelona suggests something new: β.Torics, a spherical solar technology. We definitely believe in solar energy here at Helix – it will be interesting to see where this prototype goes!

Another interesting development is Flex, a new lighting system by 3M.
